Mihailo Obrenović (16 September 1823 – 10 June 1868) served as the Prince of Serbia from 1839 to 1842 and again from 1860 to 1868. His first reign ended in 1842 when he was overthrown, and his second concluded in 1868 with his assassination. He is widely regarded as a significant reformer and the most enlightened ruler of modern Serbia, often compared to other European enlightened absolute monarchs. Mihailo successfully negotiated the withdrawal of Ottoman troops from Serbian lands while preserving certain ties between Serbia and Constantinople. He was also a strong proponent of the idea of a Balkan federation to oppose the Ottoman Empire.
